Your journey to secure digital asset management begins here.
Thank you for choosing Trézor. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to initialize your new hardware wallet, ensuring maximum security from the very first moment. It is critical that you follow these instructions precisely, as any misstep in the setup process could compromise the future safety of your funds. The entire process, including firmware updates and seed phrase backup, should take approximately 15–20 minutes. Please allocate this time without interruption in a private, secure environment.
Never enter your Recovery Seed on a computer, phone, or any electronic device. The Seed must only be written physically on the provided cards. Always double-check the URL in your browser is exactly https://suite.trezor.io/start before proceeding. Phishing sites are common, and verifying the secure connection (the padlock icon) and the address bar is your first line of defense.
Begin by connecting your Trézor device to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The device screen should light up and display a welcome message or a padlock icon. If nothing happens, try a different USB port or ensure the cable is securely fastened. Your computer will recognize the device as a standard hardware accessory.
To manage your device and cryptocurrencies, you need the official Trézor Suite application. Download the latest version directly from the official link provided on the startup page. **Do not use third-party installers or app stores.** Once downloaded, install the application and launch it. The Suite will prompt you to connect your device, recognizing it automatically once the connection is established. This application acts as the secure interface between your operating system and the hardware wallet.
The Trézor Suite will immediately check the current firmware installed on your device. Every brand-new Trézor ships without firmware or with outdated initial firmware. This is a deliberate security measure. The Suite will offer to install the latest, officially signed firmware.
Before confirming the installation, verify that the fingerprint/hash displayed on your computer screen **matches** the unique fingerprint shown on your Trézor device screen. This cryptographic check confirms that the firmware being installed is the authentic, uncompromised software signed by Trézor. If the fingerprints do not match, **immediately stop and contact support.** Do not proceed under any circumstances.
Once verified, confirm the update on both the computer and the device. The update process involves flashing the memory and typically takes less than two minutes. **Do not disconnect the device or interrupt the computer during this phase.** A successful update will be confirmed by the Suite, and your device will restart, ready for wallet setup.
The next step is the creation of your cryptographic keys, which are represented by your Recovery Seed. You have the option to "Create New Wallet" or "Recover Wallet." For a brand new device, always select **Create New Wallet**.
The Trézor Suite will display 12, 18, or 24 words one-by-one on the **device's secure screen**. **It is absolutely vital that you write down each word exactly as displayed on the physical card provided in the packaging.** Pay close attention to spelling and the sequence of the words. This sequence is the master key to all your cryptocurrencies and assets managed by this device. No one, including Trézor staff, can recover this seed for you if it is lost.
After writing down all words, store your Recovery Seed Card in a secure, fireproof, and waterproof location. **Do not photograph it, scan it, or store it digitally (even encrypted).** The Seed is the ONLY way to recover your funds if your Trézor device is lost, stolen, or destroyed. The Suite will then prompt you to perform a simple verification to ensure you have correctly transcribed the words.
Finally, you will set a Personal Identification Number (PIN). This PIN is required to unlock your device every time you want to send transactions. The PIN is entered on the computer using the randomized grid shown on the Trézor screen, making it resistant to keylogging attacks.
Choose a strong PIN of 6 to 9 digits. Avoid simple sequences like "123456" or birth dates. Due to the randomized grid entry, complexity is prioritized over memorability, as long as you can reliably input the pattern. You will be asked to confirm the PIN twice. With a successful PIN set, your Trézor device is now initialized, secured, and ready for use!
